Paper Characteristics: Uncoated paper
Uncoated paper absorbs ink into the paper, just like a sponge. There are several finishes that can be applied, which will enhance your printed project. The finishes that can be applied to paper during manufacturing are one of the most important physical properties of paper. Finishes affect characteristics such as smoothness, textures, shine, and print quality. Some finishes provide textures that are not available in coated papers.
Paper naturally has peaks and valleys throughout the sheet, which can give the paper an un-unified and sometimes lightly pitted appearance. As in my previous blog, I mentioned the two coatings that can be applied to the paper to make the paper have a smoother appearance. However, you may be working on a printed project where you have decided that an uncoated sheet will work best. If so, and your project doesn’t require a texture, then you may select a smooth finished sheet of paper. The finish is applied to the paper during the manufacturing process. The Smooth finish is the most popular finish found in uncoated types of paper and is very versatile. This finish is ideal for high profile pieces that seek a powerful impact.
Paper is made smooth as it is being manufactured by a process known as “calendaring”. In this process the paper passes through several rollers. These rollers press the excess water out of the paper, which makes the paper smooth. How tight the rollers are, defines how smooth the paper will be.
