Paper Characteristics: Cover Paper
Cover paper, commonly referred to as cardstock is thicker than the text or bond papers. This type of paper can be found in several pre-cut sizes, various weights, and colors to select from. This type of paper has more durability and dimensional stability than lighter weight paper. Most brands have a uniform printing surface.
Many brands of cover paper work well when die cutting and embossing.
Cover paper can be used in its original uncoated version, but can also be coated, and there are many finishes and texture options that can be applied to the surface.
If your finished project includes the capability to be written on, such as a RSVP card, etc., it is best to select an uncoated or dull coated cover paper. Gloss coated sheets can smudge and are difficult to write on.
If your project mostly consists of printed words and doesn’t include graphics, uncoated or dull coated sheets will work best. Gloss sheets can have a lot of glare, therefore are usually difficult to read.
If your creative plans include a coated cover sheet; and your project includes folding, then you should select a cover paper that is 80#s or less. Coated sheets can crack during the folding process in cover paper over 80#s. Folding against the grain can cause very un-appealing edges. Should you need to fold against the grain, uncoated cover paper usually works well when it is scored.
There are several end uses for this type of paper, such as: book covers, business cards, direct mail, report covers, greeting cards, door hangers, menus, announcements, postcards, and promotional materials; to name just a few.
